I’m not fussed by Oasis
Never was. Liam looked he needed a clip round the ear – still does – and as for the other one with the rest of the eyebrows, his resting bitch face used to drive me mad.
And anyway, this whole reunion shebang won’t be all that. In fact, most likely it will be like this.
But while the whole world is looking back not in as much anger as me, perhaps, I’m not missing out on the sweet dopamine of a nostalgia binge.
So I’m taking you, you lucky people, for a walk through 2 decade’s worth of TV gold; cinematic masterpieces and general awkward “did that really happen?” moments.
Sit back, enjoy and gaze in wonderment at what we used to have.
1970s
On TV
There wasn’t much to get excited about in the Britain of the 1970s. It was grey, it was grumpy. We didn’t lead the world in much apart from dubious clothing and, of course, public information films.
And I, for one, will never, ever boil a kettle on a boat.
On the Big Screen
There wasn’t much going on at home on the TV – if you had one. But there was plenty to get into at the cinema. So I’ve got a little quiz: can you guess the 1970s blockbusters from the short reviews below?
On your Plate
There’s lots of places I could take you too here. And for some of you of a certain age, you’ll have buried these culinary nightmares deep where no therapist dares to delve. So let’s remember the good stuff.
Like: Angel Delight. Here’s how you can do it, and your kids can help.
1980s
On TV
A golden age. I mean really, I could be here for hours, weeks, months talking about everything from Dallas to Dynasty, Albert Square to the Rovers Return.
But I’m going for this. Del Boy vs the bar.
On the Big Screen
The age of the blockbuster. A time when Hollywood decided that budgets were for blowing.
Goose. Maverick. Iceman. Fighter jets. Sweaty and oily volleyball. Marty McFly, the Doc, the DeLorean and, of course, Biff Tannen. Doing what we want to do, right now, and going back in time.
And of course, despite moments of genuine panic inducing cringe, remember this: Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner.
On your stereo
Take your pick. We have never had it as good as we did in the ‘80s. Too many bangers too mention, so just tune in and begin the dance.
On your plate
After the belt-tightening of the 1970s, the ‘80s are the decade where the culinary envelope wasn’t just pushed, it was fired out of a cannon and a new dawn of deliciousness began. And what better than a little treat to help you enjoy your ‘80s tunes? Prawn cocktail.
Simple. But fabulous.
