Dedicated follower of fashion?
You might not think greying, middle-thickening hombres like me keep our ears pressed to the catwalk when it comes to tracking fashion.
My friend, you couldn’t be more wrong. I mean, you could be.
But nevertheless, you can find me bopping up and down on fashion’s fickle seesaw, rocking between moccasins and open-toed sandals, pondering when to press “Knitwear” on our favourite (secret) fast fashion apps. Always looking for that next big thing.
“At some point, looking like Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas from Miami Vice should be everyman’s goal.”
So, as we press on through the darkening underbelly of Autumn, what is the post-summer Dad looking for in his wardrobe du jour? Well, we need fashion to support our busy lifestyles. We need to be robust. We need to feel supported. We need VARIETY.
So, rather than always being achingly cool, there are moments when we need to look the part. These are some of them.
Social Dad
Something nice. Something…Miami Vice.
At some point, looking like Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas should be everyman’s goal. And that time is now.
Effortless cool, an unshakeable confidence in not wearing socks, and enough hairspray to crack right through the O-Zone layer.
That’s my vibe. That, and dreaming of transporting a beautiful lady in my fast boat from Florida to Cuba for a mojito.
Working Dad
It can’t be easy cutting a figure of fine fashion in today’s workplace.
What with everyone in an office looking like they fell over in a Next sale, or people working from home joining Zoom calls in their undies, an ill-fitting band t-shirt from a group they’ve never heard of, or worse, a shirt and tie in an inexplicable homage to corporate life.
But hey, if you’re a Dad on the tools, dress like you’ve got an idea, as well as all the gear.
Chunky trainers for comfort due to arthritis = CHECK
Robust toolbelt packed with hardware = CHECK
Multipocketed shorts = CHECK
Airport Dad
International travel doesn’t just require a Dad to know an itinerary off by heart in 4 languages with the know-how to arrive at a terminal 6 hours ahead of schedule.
A Dad in the airport needs to look the part, too. Dressing like your own Dad, Dad.

It comes to us all, my friends.
Birkenstock by Birkenstock. From urban slacks to some sort of utility sports jacket with strange pockets and a sailing theme.
My advice? Own it. Let it happen. Embrace your destiny.
