The Christmas mystery
Festive fever captures the male brain in ways our best scientists are yet to fully understand.
We can put man on the moon but can we understand why they don’t carry out a basic MOT before volunteering to be driven around, dressed as Santa, pulled by a car with a knackered clutch?

No. No, we do not understand this.
“Sometimes it’s enough to put up a tree, decorate it and keep it well watered for a couple of weeks. But sometimes you need an ironic inflatable. Or maybe you need to recreate scenes from Die Hard. Why?”

But we can appreciate that many men do go above and beyond in the service of the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. So let’s salute a few of them, shall we?
1. Santa Dad
As we’ve already seen, one of the classic genres of men at this time of year are the various Fathers Christmas we get to see up close and personal.
Always dressed to impress.
Always dressed to fool absolutely nobody.
God bless’em for trying.

2. Spirit of Christmas Dad
One thing I find about Christmas for Dads is that it’s never about them, really. They go out of their way to be happy with their lot and happy for everyone else, too.
And when it comes to entertaining the masses, well, they get stuck in. Christmas stories for the kids? They’ve got you covered.

Doing that thing where they get wrapped up in that stuff they put around Christmas trees at the garden centre? Yeah, they’ll have a go.
3. Decorations Dad
Sometimes it’s enough to put up a tree, decorate it and keep it well watered for a couple of weeks. Sometimes you need to go a bit further and put up some exterior lights. Sometimes you need an ironic inflatable.

Why? Because you’re a Decorations Dad, that’s why.
4. Party Dad
There is a man who comes alive for one night, every year. At the office Christmas party.
This man has a family. He has kids. He has no regrets. He should have some regrets.
5. Family Dad
Look, this might just be a snowy time of year, might not even be Christmas. But surely you can’t deny it has that festive good times feel?
That there’s a sense here of a man who pushes limits when it comes to making sure the kids enjoy themselves when the temp drops and Santa’s been to visit.
